I’m an older guy in my 70’s and I do wear a speedo. The real reason many men around my age wear them is not typically for the explanations given like; they bring back memories, their flattering to wear etc. The primary reason is that like women, our appendages lose their elasticity as we grow older. Just like a woman’s breasts, which are prone to sagging so too are a man’s genitals. Most traditional boxer swim suits, even the one with the mesh liners, fail to keep our boys comfortable and in place. The speedo swim suit, although not necessarily attractive on most older men, does the job in providing that needed support and minimizes the risk of our boys making a public appearance. There probably are some swimsuit designs out there that could do the job but the Speedo is easy to wear, relatively cheap and quick to dry. This is why us older guys like them.

I’m a senior male who recalls very well than many men in the 60’s and 70’s wore speedos. I don’t recall that there was any concern or comment about appropriate bathing wear. All male competitive swimmers wore them and they were very common on every beach. As the turn of the century approached, I began to notice a distinct shift in our culture, toward “modesty”. I use the term in quotes because up until that time it was never an issue, This attitude continued and doubled down to the extreme fake modesty we have today. It feels totally artificial and when I see photos of men at the beach with their nipples blacked out or crawling infants with their bum photoshopped out, I have to wonder who is doing this. There is a public swimming pool in Lyon, France which prohibits the baggy swim shorts. All the men there wear a speedo and seem very comfortable in their own skin. They say it is for health reasons. I’m sure they are not alone.
