Swim trunks have mesh lining to provide support, comfort, and protection. The mesh acts as a built-in brief, holding everything in place while reducing chafing and irritation. It also allows for breathability and quick-drying, preventing excessive moisture and promoting a more enjoyable swimming experience.
In this post, I will explain the reasons why swim trunks have mesh, the benefits they offer, and their overall importance for a comfortable and enjoyable swimming experience.
What is the Purpose of the Mesh Lining?

The primary purpose of the mesh lining in swim trunks is to provide support, comfort, and protection. This inner lining is typically made from a breathable and quick-drying fabric, such as polyester or nylon. It is strategically placed to cover the groin area and serves as a barrier between your skin and the outer fabric of the swim trunks.
Benefits of Swim Trunks with Mesh

Now that we understand the purpose of the mesh lining, let’s explore the benefits it offers:
1. Hygiene and protection
The mesh lining plays a crucial role in maintaining hygiene and protecting the wearer. By creating a barrier between the skin and the fabric, it helps to minimize direct contact with potentially harmful bacteria, UV rays, and other external elements. This is particularly important when swimming in public pools or shared bodies of water, where bacteria and germs can be present.
2. Durability and longevity
The mesh lining in swim trunks also contributes to their overall durability and longevity. By providing additional support to the fabric, the mesh helps to distribute stress and tension evenly, reducing the likelihood of tears or fabric degradation. This prolongs the lifespan of the swim trunks, ensuring that they can withstand frequent use and exposure to chlorine, saltwater, and sunlight.
3. Versatility and style
In addition to its functional benefits, the mesh lining can add a touch of style and versatility to swim trunks. Many swimwear brands incorporate unique prints, designs, and colors into the mesh lining, allowing for a more visually appealing look. This can contribute to the overall aesthetic of the swim trunks, making them more fashionable and on-trend.
4. Support and comfort
One of the key advantages of the mesh lining is its ability to provide support to the wearer. The mesh acts as a built-in brief that helps to hold everything in place, offering a more secure and comfortable fit. It prevents excessive movement and potential discomfort during swimming or other water activities.
5. Breathability and quick-drying
Another significant advantage of the mesh lining is its breathability. The porous nature of the mesh allows air to circulate freely, keeping the groin area cool and reducing the risk of excessive sweating. This is particularly important when engaging in physical activities in or around water, as it helps to regulate body temperature and prevent discomfort caused by excessive moisture.
Do All Swim Trunks Have Mesh Lining?
Not all swim trunks have mesh lining. While it is a common feature in many swim trunks, there are variations in swimwear designs that may not include a mesh lining. Some swim trunks may have a different type of lining or no lining at all. The presence or absence of mesh lining often depends on the style, brand, and personal preference of the wearer.
Can You Remove the Mesh Lining?
While the mesh lining in swim trunks offers numerous benefits, some individuals may prefer to remove it. This often comes down to personal preference and comfort. If you find the mesh uncomfortable, itchy, or restrictive, it is possible to remove it from your swim trunks. However, it’s important to note that removing the mesh may alter the fit and structure of the swim trunks, so consider this before making any modifications.
If you do decide to remove the mesh, it is advisable to replace it with a separate pair of underwear that provides the necessary support and comfort. This will help maintain the integrity of the swim trunks and ensure an enjoyable swimming experience.
Why do some swim trunks not have mesh?
Some individuals find the mesh uncomfortable or restrictive and prefer the freedom of wearing swim trunks without it. Additionally, swim trunks without mesh lining may offer a more lightweight and flexible feel, suitable for those who prefer a less structured fit.
Conclusion
The mesh lining in swim trunks serves a vital purpose in providing support, comfort, and protection to the wearer. Its breathable and quick-drying properties, along with its ability to prevent chafing and irritation, make it an essential component of swimwear. The mesh lining contributes to the longevity and durability of swim trunks while offering versatile style options. While it is possible to remove the mesh if desired, it’s important to consider the potential impact on fit and structure.

JUST WEAR a JOCKSTRAP!
Jockstraps do work great, especially at beaches and in dealing with marine life swimming up your trunks. Small fish can get inside and trapped in inner linings. As a professional lifeguard for many years, I wore uniform boxer style or surf short swim trunks with and without inner liners, and with or without jockstraps, for work daily. I worked at both beaches and pools. But pool chemicals will destroy the elastic waist bands in most jockstraps over about 6 to 8 months of daily pool use. Be sure to wash out your jockstraps in the shower, right after each use, as you shower off. Fresh shower water helps get the pool chemicals out of the jock and plain soap sanitizes it for the next use. Hang dry jocks to avoid dryer heat damaging the elastic waist band. The pouches and legs straps last almost forever. It’s always the waist bands that get overstretched, puckered, and wear out. The thinner waist swim jockstraps have a one inch wide waist band for men who don’t want to swim with the wider standard 3 inch waist band of normal sports jocks. The standard 3 inch waist bands work great for most lifeguards and won’t fall off, like some fashion jockstraps waists might slip down in heavy activity. Most jockstrap waist bands will climb up your back during activity. Just push the waistband back down every now and then. Or ignore it and proudly show off your athleticism with some jock waistband showing above your swim trunks waists, as it always does in long daily use. But endless varities of jockstraps and colors and different materials are available online with different designs other than the standard white pouch, waistband, and two legs straps. Jockstraps give much better support to men’s bodies for modesty or strenuous activity and movements. Many swim trunk inner linings are too small, scratchy, chafing, or too tight legged for many men to comfortably fit into. Just cut out bad inner linings. The jock leg straps allow your backside to dry faster than most mesh inner linings. Most jockstraps pouches are a thicker mesh which gives more modesty and support. It may dry faster or slower than inner linings. Chafing is about the same for jocks and inner linings. I find jocks way more comfortable all day working. Plus, you can rotate different jockstraps each day to vary chafing spots some. For lifeguards working in elevated chairs and platforms, everyone is always looking right up the legs of your swim trunks at your male body, which is unavoidable. So the thicker and less transparent jockstraps mesh pouches cover your manhood better than most transparent inner liners, or wear dark colored boxers or briefs or bikini style underwear for modesty. White gets transparent when wet, especially for dark haired men.
